Is Road to Paradise (Longmire–Paradise) open in winter?

Open year-round from the Nisqually Entrance, the only winter way into the park. A gate at Longmire closes every night and reopens each morning once the road above has been plowed and checked for avalanche danger — so the upper road is shut most winter nights and some full days. In a few recent low-staffing winters, access above Longmire was limited to weekends and holidays. Tire chains must be carried in the vehicle from November 1 to May 1.

How we know this

We watch Mount Rainier National Park's official National Park Service alerts for anything that names Road to Paradise (Longmire–Paradise), and refresh this page with the daily build. We also show the road's normal winter access pattern above. It's our reading of public information, not an official determination. Always check the official link before you drive.
