When does Kings Canyon Scenic Byway open?

Typically open late April, traditionally the fourth Friday to mid-November (earlier with heavy snow). Plowing usually begins in April; the opening date depends entirely on snowpack and can swing several weeks.

The section below the Hume Lake turnoff to Cedar Grove closes for winter, generally mid-November to late April; the National Park Service traditionally targets the fourth Friday of April to reopen. Rockslides and flood damage on the Sequoia National Forest portion of Highway 180 have repeatedly delayed or cancelled the opening — most severely in 2023, when winter flooding damage kept Cedar Grove closed for the entire season.
