Where this comes from
Hawaii has no per-beach status feed. The Hawaii Department of Health, Clean Water Branch posts advisories — brown water after storms and heavy rain, bacteria (enterococci) test results, and sewage spills — and a beach shows here as Open unless an open DOH advisory covers it, Water quality advisory for brown-water and bacteria notices, or Closed to swimming for a sewage spill. DOH also advises staying out of brown or murky water even when no advisory has been issued. Where a notice doesn't name specific beaches we match its mapped area to nearby beaches, and anything we can't pin to a beach is listed under “Area-wide advisories.” It is our reading of DOH's public data, not an official determination, and it refreshes hourly. Always confirm with the Clean Water Branch before you swim.
