What closes on a holiday
- Visitor centers, museums and park offices — closed on Thanksgiving, December 25 and January 1 at the large majority of parks. Some also close for Veterans Day or Presidents Day. Hours the rest of the year vary by park and season.
- Ranger programs and guided tours — typically don't run on the big holidays.
- Entrance-station staffing — often reduced. If the booth is unstaffed, you may be waved through, directed to self-pay, or asked to pay online afterward.
- Concession services — lodges, restaurants, and shuttle systems set their own holiday schedules; many close or run limited hours.
What stays open
- The park itself — trails, overlooks, and the main roads that are open for the season.
- Campgrounds, on their normal reservation system.
- Self-service entry. A closed booth doesn't mean a closed gate.
Holidays that are also fee-free days
Four 2026 holidays waive the entrance fee entirely: Presidents Day (February 16), Memorial Day (May 25), the Independence Day weekend (July 3–5), and Veterans Day (November 11). Those are the busiest days of the year at fee-charging parks. The full list and the fine print are in our 2026 fee-free days guide.
Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Year's, specifically
These three are the reliable visitor-center closure days across the National Park Service. The parks are open — Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Everglades and the other winter-season parks are genuinely pleasant in late December — but plan as if there's no one at a desk to answer questions, no potable water refill inside a building, and no gift shop. Many parks run a ranger-led First Day Hike on January 1.
The one thing that overrides all of this
A federal government shutdown falling over a holiday changes the picture entirely — some parks close and barricade, others stay open but completely unstaffed. If Congress is in a funding fight around your travel dates, check the park's status the morning you leave. Our status map flags parks reporting closures and refreshes hourly.
FAQ
Are the entrance gates staffed on holidays?
Often not fully. You may find self-pay envelopes or a sign directing you to pay online. Bring a card and your park pass if you have one.
Can I camp in a national park on Christmas?
Yes, where campgrounds are open for the season. Reserve ahead on the normal system; the holiday doesn't change availability rules.
Which parks fully close on holidays?
A small number of mostly-indoor or tightly-gated sites do — check the specific park's "Operating Hours & Seasons" page on nps.gov. The 63 large designated National Parks generally do not.
